Deep Periodontal Cleaning
Periodontitis is the most prevalent oral disease in adult population. It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gums, which affects the soft and hard tissues including gums, periodontal ligaments and bone supporting the teeth. As these tissues get damaged over time, your teeth can become loose and painful.
Main Causes of Periodontal Disease
Build-up of dental plaque/calculus is the leading cause of periodontal disease. Plaque contains many types of bacteria which can affect the gum/bone health. One is more likely to develop periodontal disease if he/she has poor oral health; however, in some individuals, genetics play a big role in how their body reacts to these bacteria. Smoking is also a major cause of periodontitis.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease
Reddish or purplish gums.
Bleeding.
Soreness.
Bad breath (halitosis).
Unpleasant taste.
Pain when chewing.
Gum recession (gums that pull away from your teeth).
Loose/mobile teeth.
A change in the way your teeth fit/bite together.
Periodontal Disease Can Be Managed
Periodontitis is not curable, but is manageable with appropriate treatment. It cannot be cured because once the structural support around teeth is lost, it usually cannot be regained. However, periodontal treatment can reduce infection and rebuild your bone and tissue to some degree.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
There are several different options of treatment that will help to manage periodontal disease. Our clinic offers a deep cleaning and debridement to help manage. Scaling and root planing is similar to routine dental cleaning. But it cleans deeper beneath gums, removing plaque/calculus and bacteria where toothbrush and floss can’t reach.
During this procedure, a dental hygienist or dentist cleans (scales) the plaque from your teeth and then smooths out (planes) your root surfaces to keep bacteria from reattaching. The procedure is usually done in at least 2-4 visits using local anaesthesia depending upon severity and patient’s requirements.
